Aligarh: Primus Books recently released ‘Print Culture: Sir Syed’s Aligarh Institute Gazette.’ The book is a translation of former Department of Urdu Chairman, Professor Asghar Abbas’s book on ‘Aligarh Institute Gazette.’ Written in chaste English by former AMU English Prof Syed Asim Ali, the book has details on how ‘Aligarh Institute Gazette’ was used to propagate views on modern education and reform.
Aligarh Institute Gazette was a journal edited and published by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. It started publishing in 1886 and continued until Sir Syed’s death year, 1926.
This book underscores Sir Syed’s genius as a first rate Urdu journalist who worked tirelessly for nation building, Muslim education, Hindu-Muslim unity and socio-cultural reform. The Aligarh Institute Gazette was the organ of the Scientific Society established by Sir Syed for infusing the spirit of critical thinking and rational enquiry among the readers. All those interested in the Aligarh Movement and Sir Syed’s mission will read this book with much profit.
