If you were asked to name a personality who studied at AMU, was a selfless activist, fearless and gifted orator as well a writer, launched a newspaper but had to stop it, lived an austere saintly life and could not earn even as much as to be able to buy a basic four wall residence, you would be excused to think of Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar or may be Maulana Hasrat Mohani.

Although Maulana Muhammad Ali and Maulana Hasrat Mohani have not been remembered as much as they deserve, it is not possible for any historian worth his salt to ignore their sacrifices and contributions. However one cannot say with certainty that in a few years’ time the selfless contributions and sacrifices of the figure I am referring to will be recognised or even be remembered.

Yes the personality I am referring to Javed Habib (3 May 1948 – 11 October 2012), a fine orator, a gifted writer, an embodiment of simplicity and sacrifice, former President of AMU Students Union, convenor of All India Muslim Youth Convention (AIMY), convenor of Babri Masjid Coordination Committee and editor of Hujoom.

I am not committing the audacity of comparing the great stalwarts mentioned above to him but cannot stop comparing them with him. And my audacity is not without reason.

Coincidentally before getting a copy of Masoom Moradabadi’s book Javed Habib Hujoom se Tanhai Tak I was reading Maulana Majid Dariabadi’s book Muhammad Ali, Zati Diary ke Chand Auraq and was startled to see the reflections in Javed Habib of these two great figures.

Prof Akhtarul Wasey seems to agree with my conclusions in his article in the book in which he writes:

(‘In my Aligarh days whenever I looked at Javed Habib’s unflinching faith in Almighty, his contentment and his bohemian style, I wonder why I was reminded of Hasrat Mohani… Who was there among community leaders he did not have personal contacts with?… His relations with national leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpaee, Chandra Shekhar, Babu Jagjivan Ram, V.P. Singh and Narasimha Rao are not hidden from anyone. Those who, due to their negligence, used to criticise and taunt Javed Habib, I always confronted them with the one question: Despite his access to top figures in the parliament what has he achieved either for himself or for his family?’)

Prof Wasey is one of those who had worked with Javed Habib as a student leader and in later life as well. Highlighting the financial difficulties that Javed Habib must have faced Prof Wasey writes:

(‘It is said that Allah is the Causer of the causes and by looking at Javed Habib my belief in it was further strengthened. In this world where one needs resources, with Zubaida Bhabi, God had blessed Javed Habib a life partner who had, almost, relieved him from financial and domestic responsibilities. Dr Zubaida Habib, who served as a senior teacher at Jamia Millia’s Teachers College, was the greatest supporter and strength of Javed Habib. Surely a life partner like Zubaida Bhabi, who had been an embodiment of contentment and patience, was surely God’s reward to Javed Habib for his virtues’).

Even greater and startling insights about this saintly activist have been provided by poet, journalist and writer Farooq Argali. Describing the post emergency political seen and anti-Indira Gandhi movement launched by the Janata Party he says that it was on Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna’s advice to invite Javed Habib, ‘a greater orator’ from Aligarh, and involve him in the election campaign that Jagjiwan Ram sent him (Farooq Argali) to Aligarh and invite Javed Habib.

Describing a public meeting he writes:

(‘An election meeting for Babuji had been arranged in the sprawling field of Dalmia Cement Factory in Dehri-on-Sone. Without any exaggeration it was a gathering of people between 50-6000. Babuji was supposed to reach there after finishing other meetings and was delayed. Audience were losing patience. Our group, after the rally of Bhabwa reached Dehri at about 9 PM. Javed Habib took the mike and it seemed as if he cast a magic spell upon the audience. Having spoken for an hour, non-stop, when he was about to leave the mike the uproar of “speak more, speak more” rose [followed by the slogan of] “long live Javed Bhai”. Javed Habib resumed his speech. Babuji arrived at about 12:30 pm. Spell-bound and mesmerised for the last three hours by Javed Habib’s speech the gathering was completely silent. Those who had heard this speech delivered in a rare style will never be able to forget it.’)

The result was, writes Argali,

(‘In the lections Congress was swept away. The time came for the formation of Janata Party Government in the centre… This was the time when Javed Habib was liked and admired by all the leaders in the centre. An influential politician like Piloo Mody loved him. If he had wished, Javed Habib could have gotten one of the highest posts or secure any other benefit for himself. But in his mind a storm of a new interpretation of a dream for the community was gathering momentum. He liked Babu’s idea of Dalit-Muslim unity. He wanted to do politics on the strength of this unity. In 1980, 28 months old Janata Government collapsed. Indira Gandhi became Prime Minister again. Babuji formed his Congress (J) party. Bahuguna went back to Congress as its Secretary General. Imam Saheb [Abdullah Bukhari] resumed his fanatical politics. All of the parties opened their shops. But Javed Habib remained with Babuji with steadfastness. On Suresh Ram’s insistence Javed Habib settled in Zakir Nagar from where he also started weekly Hujoom. The world saw that Javed Habib was not only a good orator but was also a writer, intellectual and journalist of a very high calibre. It was at this time that Javed Habib presented the idea of an All India Muslim Youth Convention to Babuji. Babuji was thrilled. “This is a very good idea. Start working on this immediately” He said.’)

Those with some history of Khilafat Movement will be surprised to see this resemblance described by Mr Argali. He writes:

(‘In those days when the city was buzzing with discussions about Muslim Youth Convention Babuji was very happy. That day a rare and strange incident of Javed Habib’s self-respect was displayed. Javed Habib, Suresh Ram and this scribe were discussing general arrangements for the Convention. During the discussion the topic of members of the reception committee came up. Javed Habib said that messrs. so and so are in the reception committee. Suresh Ram said “Make Mr. Hannan, the Rajya Sabha member from Bengal as the Chair of the Reception Committee.” To this Javed Habib replied, “Chair has been elected and changing it at this stage is not possible”. Suresh Ram did not like his response. He stressed, “Mr Hannan is our man. He is an influential figure in his state. What is this that our money is being spent on the convention? You are not being fair on this.”’)

(‘Javed Habib stood up. “I won’t organise the convention with your money.” He said and went out of the bungalow. Suresh told me through gesture to stop him. I came out with him but he did not even let me call a taxi for him… Suresh Ram’s mentioning of money pained him so much that the whole game came to an end and relations with Jagjivan Ram also got severed.’)

And when he addressed the inaugural meeting of the Convention this is what he said:

(‘Friends and elders! For the faces redolent with optimism and brains full of light that are present in this session I have two presents: one is of my tears and the other of a little smile and between these two a silence of helplessness. My tears come from my personal helplessness … my smile stems from [the dream of] a future, a possibility and the revolutionary message that was presented by the Holy Prophet (PBUH) 1400 years ago…

‘My friends and elders, today a person is addressing you who, along with his friends, is trying to break the silence [but] who does not have resources nor does he have piles of wealth. Whose newspaper can be closed at will. About whom posters are displayed in Delhi that he is a Congress (I) man and in Mumbai posters claim that he is an opponent of Congress. If he tries to seek help from an organisation or an institution or negotiates with an individual he is accused of hatching conspiracy. Allegations are raining upon him. [But] This Convention is being held despite these hurdles and oppositions because if our spirits are pure and our intentions are clean then except God no power in the world can stop us from the path to a revolution.’

Another of Javed Habib’s close friends and associates from AMU days to the launch of Hujoom and political activism, Farhat Ahsas writes:

(‘In order to maintain his independence he declined to accept many high posts. Prime Minister V.P. Singh tried to give him a designation in Minority Commission but he did not look at it as befitting for him. I am an eye witness to this fact that one night V.P. Singh, in his capacity as the Prime Minister, phoned Javed Habib at least two-three times asking him to file papers for membership of Rajya Sabha. But Javed Habib insisted that he could go to Rajya Sabha only as an independent candidate and not as someone’s representative. By this he meant that he was not willing to represent like the Imam of Jama Masjid. V.P. Singh wanted to please both in one go. Result: next day M Afzal filed the papers and became an MP. He [Javed Habib] had direct contacts with four Prime Ministers who he could phone direct at any time.’)

As some of the contributors have opined in the book about his thinking, Javed Habib was always 15 years ahead of his colleagues and this quality was coupled by another quality that he never hid anything from anyone. The result was misunderstandings, many deliberately created and spread by his opponents.

Shahid Siddiqui rightly says:

(‘Javed Habib’s problem was that he was a master of various trades. He possessed many talents but failed to use his talents fully otherwise, the fact is that he would have emerged as one of the most distinguished Muslim leaders of the country.’)

By compiling the writings on Javed Habib of those 25 writers, journalists, academics, poets, politicians and activists who had the privilege of working with or seeing him, Masoom Moradabadi, an eminent Urdu journalist and editor of daily Jadid Khabar, has done a great service to Indian Muslim history. This book is a must read for Aligarians in particular and Muslims in general, especially those who are interested in the political affairs of Indian Muslims. Not only does it contain writings on Javed Habib, it also has some selected write- ups and speeches by Javed Habib.

This book also provides several pieces of interesting information like, for example, in his student days the known historian and former Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia Prof Musirul Haq had contested for the presidency of AMU Students Union and that Javed Habeeb’s speeches, the chief campaigner of Mushirul Haq’s rival, Prof Altaf Husain, had played important role in his defeat.

This is a tragedy that a talented person like Javed Habib failed to deliver what he was capable of for the community and in return the Community failed to give him the recognition that he deserved. As Farhat Ahsas says:

(‘Javed Habib often looked to me like a character of a Greek tragedy. A character that is consumed by the very fire that results from the choices that the character makes itself. But these characters have immensely high thinking, immense truth, immense courage and immense creativity and this is the reason why even in the ashes of their defeats there is so much light that is far brighter than the lights of victory of many. Javed Habib saw a big dream but could not provide the vision that had the power to fulfil this dream. May be such an eye has not yet come into being. But if the history of a creative struggle of Indian Muslims was ever written, and written with honesty, then it will not be able to ignore Javed Habib’)
