Kolkata: As many as 67 Muslim needy bright meritorious students pursuing graduate and post graduate courses received scholarships with the financial assistance of Human Welfare Foundation, New Delhi, and Students Organisation of India (SIO), West Bengal zone here.
Students of graduate level got the first instalment of Rs 10,000 while those at the post-graduate level got Rs 20,000 at the function organised at the Urdu Academy Hall on Monday, March 2. The total amount of scholarship will be Rs 60,80,000 that will be given to the poor and meritorious Muslim students. These students included those from Science, Journalism, Political Science, Law and Management streams.

Salimullah Khan, senior manager at the Human Welfare Foundation, said, “Students who get good marks get the scholarship. To reach their final destination, they have to give more attention to their study. After attaining the success, they will realize the necessity of higher studies.”
“The scholarship amount may not be entirely sufficient to the needy students, but it can at least offer some relief in their financial crisis to maintaining/continuing studies,” he said.

Most of the beneficiary students of this scholarship are those who are studying in B Ed courses. “They are teachers of future and they will be responsible to make/prepare good students by their teaching the next generations,” he said.
Research scholar of Oxford University Shahnawaz Ali Raihan encouraged the students: “Muslim students should take challenge of the modern world. It will not be success if they study only from the syllabus. Islam is the religion based on different kinds of knowledge. Islam spreads the root of knowledge. So, students should find out the inventive knowledge in the plight of Islam, then they can be good students and good human beings.”

Saumitra Dastider, renowned documentary film maker, said, “Presently Islamophobia has grabbed the world over. I am trying to catch this situation through my documentary.”
Dastider said he also wants a workshop to be organized in this regards with the Muslim students.

Shubhojit Baghchi, in charge of Bengal edition of The Hindu daily, said, “Journalism profession was not popular about 15 years ago. But now, the trend has changed. However, now a journalist needs to be more alert than previous generation due to modern facilities.”
Former president of state Jamat-E-Islami Hind Rahmat Ali Khan, deputy manager of HWF Muhammad Arif, state co-ordinator of HWF Masud Alam, SIO state president Mafiqul Islam and many others were present at the scholarship distribution programme.
