CLMC condemns police over action in the name of Mission Chabutra

It alleges as illegal the police act of detaining, threatening to register cases against youngsters

By TCN News,

Hyderabad: The Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee (CLMC) on Wednesday strongly condemned the police operation in the name of clamp down here on late night sitting in front of the homes (chabutra – platform abutting a wall) and standing on the street corners and discussing various issues, commonly known as “Mission Chabutra”.

It has also demanded Telangana government to instruct police to stop the over action of police.

“The act of the police is completely illegal and grave violation of civil liberties of the people. There is no Act or Provision in the Rule of Law to arrest the people including the teenagers for sitting or standing in their localities. This over action of police is nothing but an act to show that they are working in the interest of curbing the social evils. But, in fact the intention is mala fide,” Lateef Mohammed Khan, general secretary of CLMC, said in a release here.

The first and foremost thing is that the police detained more than 500 youngsters and collected complete details from the youngsters and their parents including their mobile numbers, contact numbers, house numbers and family details. There is apprehension among the people that in near future police may target their youth and may implicate them in false cases by using the data collected. The second thing is that the police are tarnishing the image of Muslim community by the ‘show off’ in front of media so that the community is defamed. The police are connecting all this operation in the name of eradication of social evil among the Muslim community and also connecting to the death of a youngster Nabeel, who recently died in the friendly fight (wwf style).

But in this recent operation police is targeting every citizen including youth and minors. As per the information received among them there were many who were coming from their workplaces and most of them were sitting in front of their houses due to unbearable summer heat of this year.

“This committee wants to make it clear that the intention of police is not what it wanted to show or express. It is an act to develop a fear complex among the people especially the youngsters. Obviously this police operation leaves a bad impact on the minds of minors, who spent whole night under the police custody without any crime committed. If at all police’s intention was honest, then they would have taken help of social organizations by various methods. They would not have brought the youngsters in front of media, photographed or videographed them,” it said.

This committee came to know that police deputed so many informers in Facebook and other social media to appreciate this police operation; thus helping themselves to save from criticism.

The committee called police as “the root cause of all the social evils” because “under the supervision of the police, hookah centres, betting at chess & caroms centres, parlors, illegal financers, land grabbers, trafficking, drugs business, Gudamba centres (illicit liquor) etc. are all growing.”

“Why is there no watch or attempt to eradicate such worst social evils by the police? If at all the police have any concern, all these should be closed and vanished from the city. The police have lakhs of rupees collection in the form of mamool from these people because of which they do not act against them,” the release claimed.

“Therefore, the committee demands the government of Telangana to instruct the Director General of Police to stop the over action of police and end carrying out typical type of operations for media publicity,” Khan added.
