London : Tore Naerland, president of Norway-based organisation Bike for Peace, which seeks to initiate and develop a grassroots concern for the local environment as well as creating an understanding of the national and global consequences of the actions of individuals, communities and campaigns was awarded the International Peace Award on by The Gandhi Foundation on Wednesday.
The Gandhi Foundation, a London-based organization founded in 1983, launched its prestigious Gandhi International Peace Award in 1998. The catalyst for the creation of the foundation was Richard Attenborough’s movie Gandhi, which attracted large audiences around the world, due in part to the sensitive portrayal of Gandhi by Ben Kingsley.
The award ceremony was held in House of Lords, London where Naerland was awarded in recognition of the work he has done over many years in promoting a nuclear-free world.
In 1977 Tore Naerland and Helge Hundeide started their first international bicycle tour which they called “Bike for Peace”. This first tour was Coast to Coast in the USA-Seattle to Washington DC. Since 1978, Bike for Peace has organised peace and friendship rides in more than 104 countries.
The leader of Bike for Peace, Tore Naerland has been fighting for peace, disarmament and democracy on the planet for almost 30 years. He has been promoting peace by organising biking and cultural tours in various countries since 1978 and inspired many to join his ideas.
