Guwahati : In a move to increase enrollment of students and to reduce school dropout rate in government schools, the Assam government said on Monday that it has decided to provide free text books to the students of Class 9 and 10 from the 2017-18 academic year.
The government had already asked the department concerned to make the free text books available to students by December 25 this year as the classes of new sessions in Assam starts from January 1.
“The target group of the scheme is all the students studying in class 9 and 10 irrespective of income of parents. The scheme will cover all the government High Schools and Higher Secondary Schools,” a senior official said.
“As per the notification issued by the Secondary Education Department, the Assam State Textbook Production and Publication Corporation Ltd will be the agency entrusted for printing and distribution of free text books,” he said adding that the government has also designated Director of Secondary Education as state nodal officer for implementation of the scheme.
“Similarly, the Inspector of Schools in each districts were given the charge of District Nodal Officers for implementation of the scheme,” he added.
