Hyderabad: US-based Indian Muslim Relief and Charities (IMRC), in collaboration with their Hyderabad-based sister organisation Sahayata Trust, have launched a programme to help poor and elderly women in Hyderabad in Hyderabad by providing them rations every month.
Under the program called ‘Grains for Grannies’, IMRC-Sahayata Trust identified 1,500 poor, old or physically disabled women, who are otherwise seen as a ‘burden’ by their family members after the death of their husbands. The programme identified the poorest neighbourhoods of Greater Hyderabad, like Hafiz Baba Nagar, Nampally, Bahadurpur, New Agapura, Afzal Sagar, Jhirrah, Musa Nagar,Natraj Nagar, etc. through their local volunteers to look for the needy.
“What is unique about this project is that instead of distributing money each month, they (volunteers) buy cereals, edible oil, spices, and other items of daily use, pack them and distribute the monthly ration weighing roughly 33 kgs to each person from different marked locations in the city,” said IMRC in a press release.
“We find that often, money given to poor is not used in buying food but is wasted otherwise and hence we decided to instead give rations in the name of elderly and disabled persons so that they are not seen as a liability by the rest of the family,” said Waheed Quraishi, Manager, Sahayata Trust.
“The monthly project in the form of ration to poor, old or physically disabled women has been running successfully since March, 2015 as a pilot project and then we plan to expand it to other parts of the country as well in coming years,” said Manzoor Ghori, Executive Director of Indian Muslim Relief and Charities (IMRC).
