Registration of Teesta Setalvad’s Sabrang Trust cancelled

New Delhi : The central government on Thursday cancelled registration of Sabrang Trust run by social activist Teesta Setalvad, said informed sources.

“The decision to cancel registration of NGO Sabrang Trust was taken after considering and examining all matters,” a Ministry of Home Affairs source said here.

The government had earlier “suspended” the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) license of the trust run by Setalvad, who has been vocal against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his role as the Chief Minister of Gujarat during the 2002 anti-Muslim mayhem in the state, and her husband Javed Anand.

The FCRA law regulates the foreign funding of the NGOs registered in India.

“Sabrang Trust foreign funding was suspended about nine months back in September 2015 after it was found that there were violations of the FCRA law,” a source told IANS.

The Union Home Ministry began a comprehensive probe in April 2015 against a number of NGOS including Sabrang.

“Some NGOs including Sabrang Trust and particularly those involved in protests against the Kudankulam nuclear power project in Tamil Nadu, received funds from abroad and were allegedly diverting the donations for purposes other than their mandate,” said home ministry official.
