Malegaon (Maharashtra): Cutting across their differences, many Muslim organizations decided to unite and hold a mega rally in the textile town of Maharashtra on October 7 demanding reservation for Muslims.
The rally is expected to be attended by one Lakh people from across the town and nearby areas.
Congress MLA Asif Shaikh convened a meeting on Tuesday with town’s political and non-political leaders and representatives from various organisations run by the community to discuss and appeal for making Friday rally a grand success.
During the meeting Ulama, intellectuals, political leaders and activists collectively extended support for the rally and planned for conducting it peacefully.
Asif Shaikh MLA from Malegaon who would be the convener of the planned rally said, “We have came together to demand the rightful reservation to Muslims. Various committees have suggested that the condition of Muslims in the state is worse than that of Dalits.”
He also added, “Even after the High Court quashed the reservation given to Marathas, there is a huge outcry by that community, but nobody is talking about the 5% reservation for Muslims in education upheld by the court. Muslims need to protest for restoration of the quota”.
On the suggestion of Maulana Muhammad Umrain Mahfooz Rahmani, a member of Personal Law Board, it was decided to add one more demand into the memorandum in regards with protecting Muslims’ personal laws as enshrined under the Indian Constitution.
Qari Jameel Rizvi from Sunni Dawat-e-Islami, Hafeez Jameel Muhammadi from Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadees, Mualana Feroz Azmi from Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and Maulana Shafiqul Qasmi from Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind announced support for the rally during the meeting.
