Bhagawat hoisted the flag violating the order by district collector. Following the incident, Kerala police are likely to register a case against Bhagawat and school principal for violating the rule which directs that only an elected representative or the headmaster of the school should hoist the national flag in an aided school.

Reports said Vande Mataram was sung in the function after flag hoisting and the national anthem was sung after leaders left the venue.

On Monday, district collector P Marykutty had issued a memo to the Karnakiyamman Higher Secondary school, district police chief, Tehsildar and Deputy Tehsildar, asking them not allow a political leader to hoist the flag. However, the organisers went ahead with the decision and Bhagawat, who arrived the school by 8.50 am, walked to the mast and hoisted the flag.

Meanwhile, Congress MLA from Palakkad district V T Balram criticised the government for not obstructing the RSS chief from flag hoisting. A Facebook post by Balram mocked at the government saying “my wishes to the anti Fascist government, which allowed the RSS chief to inaugurate the Independence Day celebrations at a government aided school in Palakkad.”
