Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) held a seminar on Contribution of Muslim Women in Natural and Social Sciecnces and noted pediatrician, Dr Hameeda Tariq, wife of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor, attended the seminar at the campus of Aligarh College of Education & Aligarh College of Engineering and Management (ACE & ACEM) as the chief-guest.
On the occasion, Dr Hameeda highlighted the pivotal role of women’s position in Islam, while stressing that Islam enables women to excel in fields of academics, business and politics among other areas. Giving references from the Islamic history, Dr Hameeda discussed contributions of the wives of Prophet Muhammad.
Presiding over the function, Prof Anwar Jahan Zuberi, the former vice chancellor at Calicut University, covered various areas influencing the lives of Muslim women and illustrated how they have been constructive in different fields.
Prof Naima Gulrez, Principal at Women’s College, AMU, expressed her concern for the condition of Muslim women in rural areas. She appreciated immensely the contributions of Prof M Muqim who thought of establishing an educational institute to promote educational empowerment of communities.
While delivering the keynote address, Prof Farukh Arjmand from AMU’s Department of Chemistry, delineated the contributions of Muslim women in various innovations associated with field of Science and Technology.
Prof Samina Khan, Department of English, AMU, who also delivered a keynote address, talked about contribution of Muslim women in social sciences and humanities. She emphasised on Muslim women identity, their constitutional rights and accountability of the society, family and nation towards their well being. Prof Khan highlighted AMU as a model of women empowerment.
Assistant professors and research scholars presented papers on the works of Prof Najma Mahmood, Prof Zahida Zaidi, Dr Alia Sabur, Sufia Kamal, Begum Rokeya, Ismat Chugtai, Qaisra Shahraz, Fatima Al Fehri, Fatema Mernissi, Malalai Joya, Malala Yusufzai, Khushboo Mirza and Hayat Sindi.
Prof Shahla Ghauri, Department of English, AMU, commented on the papers presented in the plenary session and also appreciated the interdisciplinary nature of the Seminar. Dr Munira T and Dr Rubina Iqbal chaired sessions and presented papers.
Ms Taab Sherwani convened the inaugural session. Dr Sadaf Jafri delivered the welcome address. Prof M Muqim, the Director and Founder of ACE & ACEM, proposed the vote of thanks.
