Mumbai: With final results declared in the BMC elections, it is clear that Shiv Sena and BJP, allies at centre and state government level but contesting separately here, have both emerged as winners. Shiv Sena got 84 seats whereas BJP won 82 seats, a huge rise from 31 seats since the last BMC elections.
Muslims representation in BMC also saw an impressive improvement, with 31 elected this year as compared to 23 in the 2012 elections. Interestingly, two Muslim candidates won on Shiv Sena tickets in this election whereas BJP, the party with the slogan ‘Sab Ka saath Sab Ka Vikas’ got no Muslim candidates elected.
The performance of Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM was less impressive. Motivated by its win Maharashtra Assembly election and wins in other corporation and zilla panchayat elections in Maharashtra, AIMIM fielded more than 50 candidates in Mumbai but won on 3 seats only. However, they would be encouraged by the performance of their non-Muslim candidate Ashwini Daniel, who emerged victorious in Pune. The party won 9 seats in Solapur, 10 seats in Amravati and one each in Pune and Akola.
Samajwadi Party also went solo in this election, and fielded maximum numbers of Muslim candidates. SP could manage to win 06 seats from 84 candidates fielded mostly from its old bastion of Govandi – Cheetacamp.
Congress won 30 seats and 11 of them are Muslim candidates, while four Muslim candidates are from NCP and 5 independent Muslim candidates won this time.
The break up of Muslim candidates from Mumbai across various parties are as follows:
Congress- 11
NCP- 4
SP-6
AIMIM-3
Independent- 5
Shiv Sena- 2
