December 6 marks the 26th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition. But the wait for justice in the matter continues and the ones responsible for the demolition of the masjid continue to remain unpunished. Like every year, this year too the government deployed heavy security in the town of Ayodhya, barricading the roads and keeping a high vigil at the site where the Babri Mosque once stood. People visiting the temple that was set up hurriedly on the ruins of the mosque are being frisked thoroughly.
Checking of vehicles at all entry points has been enhanced. Special teams are monitoring entry of outsiders into the town. Police teams are patrolling sensitive areas and prohibitory orders have been clamped barring the assembly of five or more people.
A district official told IANS that while the ‘darshan’ of Ram Lalla is allowed like all days, crowds have been asked not to raise any slogans.
Bomb disposal and dog squads have been spotted at major thoroughfares.
Meanwhile, Mohd Iqbal Ansari, the lone Muslim litigant in the Ayodhya dispute, has said that he has received a threatening letter.
According to him, the letter writer has asked him to withdraw his claim in the court or else he will be eliminated. Police have increased security at Ansari’s house.
Meanwhile, various human rights groups in Hyderabad in their press statements displayed surprise that Muslims are barred from the site but Hindutva organisations that set up a temple on the place of the demolished mosque are still performing pujas uninhibitedly.
Calling this incident a blot on democracy, both Civil Rights Monitoring Committee and Awami Insaaf Movement have condemned the destruction of the mosque, the criminal action of the kar sevaks and the criminal inaction of the State and India Judiciary. They have called for punishment to the Hindutva terrorists responsible for the demolition of the mosque and the subsequent killings of the innocent persons and have demanded the construction of the Babri Masjid on the same site after the SC verdict.
The hearing of the Babri Masjid case is slated for July 2019.
