Tiruchirappalli: Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) today clarified the recent controversy over payments made to Radhika Vemula, mother of Rohit Vemula, a victim of institutional murder.
In a statement issued today by IUML, its national president Prof. K. M. Kader said that payments to Radhika Vemula was made by IMUL affiliate Muslim Youth League (MYL) in the form of two cheques of Rs. 2.5 Lakh each, one of which bounced due to “clerical error.”
The payment was made to help the Vemula family secure a permanent house and not a quid pro quo for speaking against the BJP government. According to Prof. Kader, when the cheque bounced, MYL”s National General Secretary C.K. Subair immediately contacted the family and got the cheque cleared very next day.
Prof. Kader said that IUML was unaware of any promises made by MUL about donation of Rs. 20 Lakh to Vemula family, however, they will honor the promise.
“The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBU) had stated that if a promise given is not fulfilled that is hypocrisy. Muslim Leaguers have never been hypocrite in the national politics. Let the countrymen know that IUML will stand by every word given by MYL and it will honour the word of Muslim Youth League,” said Prof. Kader.
Union Minister created controversy when he said Muslim League paid money to Radhika Vemula to speak against the government. Congress criticized the minister for trying to tarnish the memory of Rohit Vemula and asked him to apologize to Ms Vemula.
Rohit Vemula a PhD student at Hyderabad Central University was found dead in a hostel room on January 17, 2016, it was reported that Rohit was pushed to suicide due to the tortuous harassment by group affiliated to BJP and RSS and being kicked out of the university.
His suicide note sparked protests not just in Hyderabad but also in several cities across India with student wings of different political parties condemned the saffron party and its offshoots and demanded justice. One such student group which stood by the Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) was Muslim students federation (MSF) of the Indian Union Muslim League.
Rohit Vemula’s death created a major political row triggering debated in the parliament with the opposition labeling this as a case of atrocities against Dalits while BJP and its affiliates propagating that Vemula was not a Dalit. And that the opposition parties were all spreading lies. However the findings of the one-man judicial commission proved that Rohit was born a Dalit and had committed suicide due to frustration at being humiliated time and again for being a Dalit.
Prof. Kader used the opportunity to inform public and the minister of various hilanthropic work in several states across India done by IMUL. “Hundreds of houses have been constructed under Syed Muhammed Ali Shihab Thangal’s Baithur Rahma Scheme in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam and Tamil Nadu for widows, blind and the orphans who have benefitted irrespective of caste, creed, religion and community. Hindus, Muslims, and Christians are the beneficiaries. Thousands of bore wells were dug to provide drinking water to the poor and the downtrodden,” read the statement.
The statement also mentioned the free distribution of medicines in Kerala through C.H. Mohamed Koya Health Centres and health treatment provided at Trivandrum Cancer Institute.
Prof K M Kader Mohideen, EX M.P and National President of Indian union Muslim League (IUML) ened the statement by questioning BJP, “Cheque bouncing is not a sin, nor is it an unpardonable crime! It happens often due to human errors. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditya Nath’s cheque bounced! Does the Union Minister say that it is a fake cheque?.”
