Dr Syed Zafar Mahmood, President of Zakat Foundation, India delivered a talk on “ Issues of Indian Muslims and their plight in India” at a conference in the presence of Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister on 3rd February at the Vidarbha Intellectual Forum at Nagpur.
Through a power point presentation Dr Mahmood after explaining how the basic tenets of Islam coincide with the fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution of India he went on to say that the Muslims of India do not need any favours but the constitutional rights that have been guaranteed to them like all other citizens of India.
He compared the situation before the BJP government coming into power and after BJP forming the government i.e., 2014 to 2019. He pointed out some glaring facts such as:
Of the 78 Ministers in the union council only one is a Muslim; how television serials portraying Muslim families in bad light were aired on a TV channel; how some media houses hired maulanas to malign their own community on live debate shows, how Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Islamia’s minority status is being opposed and the stopping of UGC aids to minority empowerment centres.
Above all Dr Mahmood rightly pointed out the discrimination based citizenship amendment bill, forcible introduction of surya namaskar, attacking couples who had inter-religious marriages and how Madarsas in UP have been given shabby treatment.
And also other issues such as the usurping of Wakf properties and graveyardsby private and government agencies and non-implementation of recommendations by the Sachar committee.
It is not just the Muslims who have been at the receiving end with cases of lynching, even Dalits and Christians have been attacked and churches have been desecrated.
For a nation to grow the citizens should be given equal opportunities and not deprived of their constitutional rights.
