Obama calls for stepping up pressure on Iran

By Xinhua,

Washington : U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama called on Monday for enhancing diplomatic pressures on Iran before Israel feels “cornered.”

He was responding to a reporter’s question whether Israel will bomb Iran’s nuclear sites some time in the year during a campaign stop in Iowa.

Without a direct answer, Obama said he is committed to “tightening the screws diplomatically on Iran” once elected as president, before Israel feels that “its back is against the wall.”

He acknowledged the Israeli position of not allowing Iran to have nukes.

Both Obama and his Republican opponent are favoring intensifying pressures on Iran, but Obama also wants to increase bilateral contacts.

McCain opposed such contacts, saying the best way to deal with the Iran problem is to work with U.S. allies.
