New Delhi : After India’s stupendous performance in boxing in the Beijing Olympics, the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) is all set to recommend Cuban coach B.I. Fernandez for another term.
Fernandez has been associated with Indian boxing for the past 17 years and his contract with the IABF has expired this month. IABF is going to seek the Cuban’s re-appointment.
“Fernandez has done a great job for Indian boxers. His term has ended. We will recommend his name to Sports Authority of India for another tenure. He was with the team for all the pre-Olympics tournaments where the boxers shaped up for the Beijing Games,” IABF secretary general P. K. Muralidhar Raja told IANS Wednesday.
“As of now, Fernandez will take a break and go back home. Indian boxing is doing very well and he has played a crucial role. We need his services,” he added.
The Cuban is also happy at the prospect of another stint with Indian boxing.
“I don’t have any problem to work with IABF. I have been associated with it for the last 17 years and it has been a great experience. There is no dearth of talent in the country and I am looking forward to work with them again,” said Fernandez.
