ASEAN, India discuss Buddhist pilgrimage tourism

Yangon : Myanmar has hosted an Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)-India Workshop on the Development of Buddhist Pilgrimage Tourism in Bagan, Mandalay and Yangon.

The workshop, held in Bagan from Aug 25 to 28, was attended by officials of tourism ministries of ASEAN countries and India, private tour operators and experts.

On Aug 25, Myanmar’s Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism, Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Deputy ASEAN Secretary-General Nicholas Tandi Dammen and Bani Brata Roy, Undersecretary at the Indian Ministry of Tourism, formally opened the workshop at Bagan.

Representatives of ASEAN and India discussed development of Buddhist pilgrimage of their countries.

At Mandalay on Aug 26, the participants discussed seeking ways for joint Buddhist pilgrimages between ASEAN and India and the project process.

On Aug 27 at Yangon, the workshop was reviewed and participants approved the discussion report and the procedures on Development of Buddhist Pilgrimage Tourism Plan.
