Chandigarh : A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court Saturday said that the decision on the bail plea of Sanjeev Bansal and Parkash Ram, accused in the cash-for-judge scam, will be pronounced Sep 8.
Bansal, former Haryana advocate general and his assistant, Parkash, were sent to judicial custody by special CBI Judge Jagdeep Jain Sep 3 and Sep 1 respectively in the judge bribery case that rocked the city last month.
“There is no question of tampering with the evidence if Bansal is awarded bail as all the documents have been already seized by the CBI,” said the defence counsel.
“CBI officials have not questioned the two Punjab and Haryana High Court judges whose names have figured in the case. CBI has also failed to explain the alleged nexus of lawyers and judges,” the defence counsel added.
The bail application of another accused Rajiv Gupta, a property dealer, was filed in the court Saturday.
On Aug 27, the CBI took over the case from the Chandigarh police.
The scandal came to light after a packet containing Rs.1.5 million (Rs.15 lakhs) was delivered at the residence of high court judge Nirmaljit Kaur Aug 13.
The judge reported the matter to the police.
The police investigations revealed that the packet was supposed to be delivered to another high court judge, Nirmal Yadav.
The Chandigarh police registered a case against Bansal and others under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Justice Yadav proceeded on leave Aug 22.
Bansal, who is known to have good connections with many Haryana politicians, judges and lawyers, was forced to resign as Haryana’s top law officer after the scam broke.
