Russian Troops to Provide Security

By Prensa Latina,

Moscow : Russian Foreign Minister Serguei Lavrov reiterated Friday that his country will provide internal security to the rebel republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, by virtue of bilateral agreements.

By a telephone conversation with the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Lavrov emphasized that international observers will be deployed only around the territories already mentioned.

The European Union (EU) will deploy about 200 peacemaking forces in the security area that mark out Abkhazia and South Ossetia with Georgia until October 1, according to recent agreements between Russian President Dmitri Medvedev and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Lavrov reaffirmed the Russian willingness to firmly contribute to the stability in the Caucasus region, in correspondence with Medvedev-Sarkozy peace Plan, noted the Foreign Ministry.

The source added that Thursday’s telephone conversation took place by US initiative.

Medvedev and Sarkozy signed a plan in Moscow to solve the conflict four days after the conversation.

The French dignitary acted as mediator representing the EU.

Russia negotiated the withdrawal of its peacemaking forces as one of the items of the agreement but will send regular troops in return to face the danger of a new aggression, remarked Moscow.
