Gifts for traffic rule violators in Chandigarh

By IANS,

Chandigarh : Traffic rule violators at five checkpoints in this city will neither be booked nor reprimanded, instead they will be given gifts, an official said Tuesday.

The police along with with a local FM radio channel will distribute gifts to the traffic violators as part of the five-day special drive “Ab Dilli Door Nahin” to create road safety awareness.

“We will continue this drive for the next five days. Under this drive, the traffic police will install checkpoints at five places in the city everyday and distribute gifts to traffic rules’ violators,” H.S. Doon, superintendent of police (traffic), Chandigarh told IANS.

“Instead of challaning (booking) these violators, we will present them gifts and honour them. The gifts include books related to traffic rules, safety helmets and UT traffic police mementoes,” said Doon.

Senior officials of the traffic police along with radio jockeys will be present at these checkpoints, he said.

“We are not expecting any immediate results out of this drive but we are sure that this effort will surely minimise the traffic violations in future.

“I will also go to some checkpoints and educate the violators. A violator will definitely give a thought to his wrong deed on reaching home once he receives some gift for it,” said Doon.

He said the aim is to sensitize the people, especially the youth, towards sensible and safe driving. “We will conduct similar drives at regular intervals in the city.”

According to the data available with the traffic police, the number of traffic fines issued by the police and road rage incidents are increasing in the region.

“Chandigarh is famous for its wide roads and less traffic all over the world. However, in the last few years traffic has increased here manifold. Following the lines of Delhi, the traffic congestion and frequent violations of traffic rules are rampant here,” said an official of the FM radio channel.
