Three guerrillas, soldier killed in Kashmir gunbattle

By IANS,

Srinagar : Three guerrillas and an army soldier were killed Friday in an ongoing gunfight in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, a police official said.

A senior police officer told IANS that a group of about ten heavily armed guerrillas was intercepted Friday by the soldiers of 3 Para Regiment in the Sriwas forest area bordering north Kashmir’s Bandipora and Ganderbal districts.

The group was intercepted near the Gangabal lake in the higher mountain reaches, 80 km from here.

“The group of militants was challenged, following which they fired on the army troops, triggering an encounter that is still going on in the mountain area,” the police officer said.

“So far, three dead bodies of guerrillas have been spotted by the troops and the gunfight is still on.”

“One soldier of the army has also died in the encounter. As per the wireless intercepts of the militants, the number of slain militants could be six,” the police official said.

The official did not confirm whether the group of guerrillas had recently infiltrated into the valley.

“That would only be known from the (examination of) papers and other evidence carried by the slain militants after the encounter is finally over,” the official said.
