Chandigarh : A man has been arrested here for allegedly raping his minor stepdaughter repeatedly over the last two years, police said Sunday.
“The accused, Chander Pal, is a resident of Rajiv Shahpur Colony in Sector 38 where he was living with his stepdaughter who is around 15 years old. He was arrested Saturday evening on the complaint of his neighbours who were suspicious of his activities for a long time,” Rajesh Shukla, station house officer of Sector 39, told IANS.
“He has been booked under Section 376 (rape) and 506 (intimidation),” Shukla said.
The victim’s mother Rajkumari had committed suicide around 10 years ago apparently because Chander Pal, 31, had illicit relations with other women, the official said.
The victim, who is six months pregnant, has told the police that her stepfather used to threaten her and she had no other option but to give in to his demands. After a medical examination, the girl has been sent to a Nari Niketan (women’s welfare home).
Chander Pal, however, confessed to the police, but said that he never ill treated the victim and loved her.
“I wanted to marry her off with some suitable boy, but she herself wanted to stay with me,” Chander pal said in his statement.
The victim’s statement would be recorded Monday before the magistrate, Shukla added.
