New Delhi : At least five people were injured in a bomb explosion in India’s northern city Kanpur Tuesday evening, police said.
The blast took place in Colonelganj district of the city around7 p.m. local time, police officials said.
The police had rushed to the spot and the injured were admitted to hospital.
The minor explosion was seemingly caused by firecrackers and not a terrorist attack, police was quoted by the Indo-Asian News Service as saying.
“It seems that a man had purchased firecrackers ahead of a festival on the end of this month, and he left his bag on his bicycle,” an official said, “the firecrackers went off accidentally, injuring five people including three children.”
Kanpur is one of the most populous cities in northern India and the country’s 5th largest city.
Twenty-four people were killed and more than 100 others injured in five explosions on Sept. 13 in several crowded markets of Delhi.
