Qatari, Egyptian top diplomats meet in Cairo, discuss Darfur

By NNN-KUNA,

Cairo : Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmad Al-Mahmoud has held talks here with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abul Gheit on the action plan of an Arab committee tasked with seeking a peaceful solution for the Darfur conflict.

Al-Mahmoud, speaking to the press after the meeting Tuesday, said they exchanged views on the committee’s action plan.

“We illustrated a completed plan in line with the expanded consultations with all parties concerned,” he said, noting that every committee member was keen on achieving peace and stability in the troubled Darfur province.

The Arab League initiative to tackle the Darfur conflict is within the Arab-Afro endeavours to reach a peaceful solution, he said.

Abul Gheit said that the committee is now focusing on reaching a broad agreement between the Sudanese parties.

The Sudanese government has a big responsibility to deal with the people accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, he asserted.

The Egyptian foreign minister said the Sudanese government should honour its commitment so as to facilitate the deployment of the UN-African Union (AU) hybrid force in Darfur.

Egypt would try to help reach a ceasefire to secure the success of negotiations, he said, coupled with the improvement of the humanitarian situation on the ground.

Al-Mahmoud, on the other hand, briefed Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa on the trip of the Arab committee members to Sudan.

A statement by the League said the visit was aimed at bringing about success of the peace talks between the Sudanese government and the rebel movements.

Al-Mahmoud was quoted by the statement as saying all parties he met were positive towards solving the Darfur conflict.
