Mumbai : Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was Tuesday granted bail within minutes of being sent to 14 days judicial custody for the attacks on north Indians by his party cadre on Sunday. However, he was given to police custody in another case of violence by MNS activists.
Metropolitan Magistrate G.R. Wankhede of Bandra Court No. 32 granted the bail to Thackeray in the case filed by Bandra police for the rioting by MNS activists on Sunday.
Wankhede simultaneously accepted an application moved by the Kalyan police seeking the MNS chief’s custody for attacks on north Indians in Kalyan last Sunday, said public prosecutor Majeed Memon.
The court granted his custody to the Kalyan police, which immediately whisked him off to the Dombivili court.
Raj Thackeray has been ordered to furnish a bail amount of Rs.15,000, refrain from threatening or influencing witnesses in any manner, avoid creating any violent situation, and also report for an hour to the Kherwadi Police station for seven days, daily at 11 a.m. to help with the investigations, Memon said.
He is likely to be presented before the Dombivili court.
Last Sunday, MNS activists in Kalyan had attacked north Indian candidates who were appearing for the Indian Railways Group D examinations to fill up 6,085 vacant posts in Maharashtra.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil said Tuesday that the government would offer compensation for the damages suffered by people all over Maharashtra on account of the violence by MNS activists.
He also announced that the state government would recover the money from the MNS, but did not specify how this would be done.
