Hero of Glasgow airport attack wakes from coma

By IANS,

London : A former baggage handler hailed for his efforts to foil last year’s Glasgow airport bombing led by Indian-born terrorist Kafeel Ahmed has woken from a two-week coma, his father said Wednesday.

John Smeaton, 32, became famous after reportedly telling the bombers: “This is Glasgow you know, we’ll set about you.”

He was put in intensive care in hospital Oct 9 after suffering an asthma attack but has now opened his eyes and can recognise his family and fiancée, his father Iain Smeaton said.

Kafeel Ahmed, a PhD student of engineering from Bangalore, drove a burning Jeep laden with gas canisters and petrol into the main terminal of Glasgow airport June 30 2007, but the attack failed after the vehicle became stuck at the gates.

Ahmed later died of burn injuries but two other men are being tried in London for their alleged involvement in the attack.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown had called the Smeaton family to offer his support.
