Heavy rains kill at least 23 in Nicaragua

Managua : At least 23 people have been killed and thousands affected in floods caused by torrential rains over the past 30 days in Nicaragua, EFE news agency reported Friday, citing officials.

The torrential rains in the Central American nation, one of the poorest in the Americas, forced the evacuations of some 11,300 people of whom more than 1,480 people were still living in temporary shelters, Civil Defence chief Colonel Mario Perezcassar told reporters.

Perezcassar said seven of the 23 fatalities were occurred in the past five days in the northern part of the country and along the Pacific coast.

According to the Disaster Operations Centre, the downpours have flooded at least 1,331 homes, of which 16 were completely destroyed.

The rains have also caused as yet unestimated damage to the country’s infrastructure and crops.
