Mob damages buses in Kolkata over woman’s death

Kolkata : An irate mob took to the streets and damaged nine buses here Friday morning after a woman was run over by a Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) dumper, police said.

The incident took place near Sealdah station, one of the busiest railway stations in central Kolkata.

“An unidentified woman was run over by a KMC dumper near Sealdah Station at around 9.30 a.m. The woman died on the spot, while the dumper driver fled the scene. Soon after the incident, a group of people damaged nine buses,” city police Deputy Commissioner (central) Damayanti Sen told reporters.

Sen said that Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were called in to control the situation as traffic was hit at major intersections.

“Traffic movement came to a halt at major roads connected to Sealdah Station, including AJC Bose Road. The situation returned to normal at around 11 a.m.,” Sen said.

“We are looking for the culprits and they will be identified soon. No one has been arrested so far,” the official added.
