Iraqi militant sentenced to death for killing U.S. soldiers

By Xinhua,

Baghdad : An Iraqi court sentenced a militant to death for his role in killing three U.S. soldiers in an attack on their force south of Baghdad in 2006, the U.S. military said on Wednesday.

The Central Criminal Court of Iraq reached a unanimous verdict Tuesday that “Ibrahim Karim Mohammed Saleh al-Qaraghuli was found guilty as charged and sentenced to death,” the military said in a statement.

The militant was charged with “acts of terrorism in the murder of three American military personnel in June 2006,” the statement added.

Two more Iraqis were found no guilty by the court and their charges as accomplices in the attack on U.S. troops were dismissed, said the statement.

On June 16, 2006, the insurgent attacked a U.S. force in the town of Yousfiyah, some 25 km south of Baghdad, killing a U.S. soldier and kidnapping two more.

Days later, the two abducted soldiers were found mutilated and killed after intensive search in the area.

Yousfiyah town is part of the so-called “triangle of death” south of Baghdad, which was under control of al-Qaida militants.
