Guadalajara, (Mexico) : India’s Thokchom Nanao Singh Saturday outboxed Grigoriy Nikolaychuk of Russia to win the gold medal in the 48 kgs category in the World Youth Boxing Championship here.
This is the first time that an Indian boxer has won a gold at the Youth Championships, formerly known as Junior World Boxing Championships. Nanao, 18, beat the Russian 15-5.
Persistently attacking the Russian, Nanao, a Commonwealth Youth Games gold winner, took a 4-3 lead in the first round. The army boy from Manipur extended the lead to 10-4 in the second round before completely overpowering Nikolaychuk, last year’s Cadet World Championship bronze medallist, in the final round.
The Indian boxing team of seven boxers have made an excellent impact in the World Championships by winning their preliminary bouts against their more fancied European Opponents. However, it was only Nanao, who could manage to enter the medal round.
A total of 287 boxers from 58 countries, born in 1990-91, took part in 11 weight categories.
The Indian team will reach capital Tuesday.
