Mexico City : At least eight people were killed and another two injured in a prison riot in the northeastern Mexican state of Durango, authorities said Monday.
The riot happened Sunday in the common area of Sentenced Pavilion B of No. 1 Social Readapting Center, Public Security Secretariat of Durango said in statement.
An initial investigation showed that the riot started with quarrels and revenges between rival groups trying to gain the control right inside the cell.
The prison authorities said the uproar began shortly after Sunday`s visits ended.
The General Prosecutor`s Office of Justice in Durango told the press that the victims, aged between 21 and 29, were hit by “offensive objects,” such as iron bars and sticks.
This year has witnessed bloody riots in several Mexican prisons. The latest occurred on Oct. 21 when 21 people died in a prison in the city of Reynosa in Tamaulipas state, near the border with the United States.
