Kolkata : Five people, including three women, were arrested for running a prostitution racket in an apartment in south Kolkata, police said here Saturday.
“Manabendra Bose and his wife Rita rented an apartment at Behala in 2007. Since then they were running a call girl racket there. Both were caught red-handed around 11.30 p.m. Friday along with two call girls and a client,” Sudharanjan Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Behala police station, told IANS Saturday.
The owner of the apartment, Ajay Mukherjee, said he had suspected that the couple were up to some illegal business and had often asked them to vacate the flat. But the couple would give him life threats.
“Ever day I saw a number of men and women frequenting the flat at odd hours. When questioned, the couple said they were their guests. But I was sure they were running some illegal business, possibly a call girl racket,” Mukherjee said.
Seeing two girls enter the house with a man around 10.30 p.m. Friday, Mukherjee called nearby residents for help.
“Youth from the nearby ‘Natun Dal Club’ were celebrating Jagadhatri Puja at that time. I called them for help, but the couple didn’t open the doors. When the youth broke open the door, they saw the two girls in a compromising position with the man. The police was called and the five were arrested,” Mukherjee added.
