Kolkata : Alleging negligence, at least 30 people in West Bengal beat up a doctor and ransacked a hospital, following the death of a patient, the police said Monday.
The incident took place at Nabagram village in Murshidabad district Sunday night.
“Dr Santanu Mondal was beaten up by at least 30 villagers Sunday night alleging that Kajem Sheikh, 52, died because of his negligence. The mob also ransacked the rural hospital where Kajem was brought for check-up,” said a senior police official at Nabagram police station Monday.
Kajem was admitted to the hospital with severe stomach ache Sunday evening, the police officer said.
“Since it was Sunday, after hurriedly examining Kajem, Mondal scribbled a prescription and left for his quarters which were on the hospital premises. Around 8.30 p.m., Kajem’s stomach began to swell. But when his relatives called for the doctor, Mondal refused to come saying it was not his duty hours,” the officer said.
After repeated requests, Mondal referred Kajem to the nearby Beharampur General Hospital.
“But Kajem died on the way to the hospital and his friends and relatives broke into Mondal’s house and thrashed him with sticks. Later they ransacked the hospital,” the officer said.
“No one has been arrested so far. However, Mondal and Kajem’s brother Maiful, have both lodged complaints against each other at Nabagram police station,” the police officer added.
