Jharkhand gets forensic laboratory

By IANS,

Ranchi : “I would not have been in jail if Jharkhand had a forensic lab,” said Chief Minister Shibu Soren while inaugurating the state’s forensic laboratory here.

Jharkhand policemen are happy to have a forensic laboratory in the state as it would help them in scientific investigation of the cases.

The much-awaited laboratory was inaugurated Saturday on the eighth foundation day of the state. While inaugurating the facility, Shibu Soren said: “I would have not been in jail if Jharkhand had a forensic lab.”

Soren was referring to his conviction and life sentence awarded in October 2006 by a Delhi court for the murder of his personal secretary, Shashinath Jha. Soren was, however, acquitted by the Delhi High Court.

Jharkhand had planned the forensic laboratory in 2002 itself.

The laboratory has facilities like DNA profiling, gas chromatograph used for chemical analysis, sample collection kit, fingerprint kit, narcotics kit and other scientific equipment.

It also has units like forensic ballistic, biology, serology, explosives and toxicology.

“The lab has all the sophisticated and analytical equipment. Narco test facilities will start here by the middle of next year,” said an official of the forensic laboratory.

“The forensic laboratory will be useful for the state police in many ways. Besides helping us in scientific investigation, it will help us in nabbing criminals and letting free the innocent people,” said S.N. Pradhan, spokesperson of Jharkhand police.
