Port Louis : The Mauritian government Thursday said none of its nationals were among the 101 killed in the massive terror attack in India’s financial capital Mumbai, but reports reaching here said the CEO of a Mauritian state bank was missing there.
There was no news on Chaitlall Gunness, the CEO of a state bank who was on a business trip to Mumbai and was staying at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel, after terrorists struck Wednesday night. It was one of the 10 places that militants attacked in Mumbai.
Gunness’ wife who was travelling with him was safe as she had gone out to make a call to Mauritius when the terrorists entered the hotel, according to members of her family in the island.
“She is safe at a friend’s place,” one family member told this correspondent.
Speaking to the local media, Mauritian Foreign Affairs Minister Arvin Boolell said he was constantly in touch with the High Commissioner in New Delhi Mukeshwar Choonee, government officials in Mumbai and the parents of students who study in Mumbai.
“What I have learnt till now is that some Mauritian nationals are blocked somewhere in some hotels. But there is no victim among them,” he said. The attack continued well into Thursday.
However, a few Mauritian students called their families back home to say the situation was very bad in the Indian city and they feared for their security.
According to the Immigration Office in Port Louis, quite a number of Mauritian nationals are presently in Mumbai on holidays or business.
