UN condemns using children as suicide bomber by Taliban

By Xinhua,

Kabul : The UN Sunday strongly denounced the reported use of children by Taliban insurgents as suicide bombers in Afghanistan.

“I strongly condemn the attack where a young boy was allegedly used as a suicide bomber against British forces in Sangin district of Helmand (province),” a statement quoted Kai Eide, special envoy of Secretary General Ban ki-Moon, as saying Sunday.

Taliban militants reportedly used a young boy as a suicide bomber against the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province Friday killing three British soldiers.

“The killing of the marines by a 13-year old boy again demonstrates the Taliban’s total disrespect for human rights,” the statement added.

Eide stressed that the “Taliban and all others who use children in warfare must cease doing so. The rights of children in Afghanistan must be fully protected.”

Taliban insurgents, who claimed to have hundreds of suicide bombers, are yet to admit to using children as suicide attackers in the war-torn country.
