Agartala : Two prominent Tripura leaders – former chief minister Sudhir Ranjan Majumder and veteran Communist leader Swaraijam Kamini Thakur Singh – died early Sunday here following cardiac arrests.

Former state Congress chief, Majumder, 74, is survived by his wife.

“The seasoned Congress leader, who had been suffering from acute diabetes and old age complications for the past few years was elected to the Tripura assembly four times and to the Rajya Sabha for one term,” said party spokesman Tapas Dey.

Dey said: “Congress president Sonia Gandhi, union minister Prithiraj Chavan, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar among a host of leaders expressed deep shock over the demise of Majumder, who was the chief minister of this northeastern state during Congress-Tripura Upajati Juba Samity (TUJS) coalition government from 1988-1992.”

The Tripura government declared a holiday Monday as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

Veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader and former legislator Singh, 75, is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.

Chief Minister Sarkar and a large number of party leaders have condoled his death.

Cremation of both leaders took place Sunday afternoon.
