UGC to set up Maulana Azad Benches; IGNOU to start Persian course

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to establish Maulana Azad Benches in different universities across the country.

Disclosing this Chairperson of the UGC Prof. Sukhdev Thorat told, “The UGC has decided to establish Maulana Azad Benches in six universities of the country. The research in these Benches would include subjects like journalism, literature, higher education, religious studies, secularism and co-education. Other research areas include Maulana Azad’s contribution in the Indian Freedom struggle, values and ethics”.

He further said, “Maulana Azad was multifaceted personality. He has contributed a lot in different fields. The proposed benches will conduct researches in these areas”.

Meanwhile, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has decided to start a certificate course in Persian language in the current academic session with the cooperation of Iran Cultural House, New Delhi. Iranian embassy will conduct interview for admission to the course. The course is designed to help students in acquiring in-depth knowledge of Iranian history, culture and literature.

Iranian embassy’s advisor Dr. Karim Najafi told the press, “Persian is spoken not only in Iran but also in a greater area of West Asia. Iran’s history, philosophy and heritage are thousands of years old.” IGNOU vice-chancellor Prof. R. S. Pillai said, “Persian has an important role in the new world order and more research and development programs need to be started.”
