Tehran : Iran’s Culture Minister Mohammad-Hossein Safar-Harandi said BBC’s Persian-language TV channel in Iran is illegal, IRNA reported Wednesday.

Tehran, Jan 21 (IANS) Iran’s Culture Minister Mohammad-Hossein Safar-Harandi said BBC’s Persian-language TV channel in Iran is illegal, IRNA reported Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, the minister said, “The BBC Persian channel began its activity in Iran illegally and unofficially.”

The BBC launched the daily eight-hour channel Jan 14.

“As previously announced by the information ministry, activities of the BBC Persian channel would disturb the country’s national security, because its producers are showing contents that harm the Islamic establishment,” Safar-Harandi said.

“The BBC has a long history of sowing discord among nations that disturb the national solidarity,” he added. He said the BBC does not have good reputation in the region.

The minister also called on those working in the Iranian media “to stop cooperating with the channel”.
