KABUL : Unknown armed men shot dead the secretary of Provincial Council in Nangarhar province east of Afghanistan on Saturday, a police official said.
“Qazi Khan Mohammad Malik Baba was on his way to office when unknown armed men shot him dead in Darai Noor district at 8:00 a.m. local time (0330 GMT),” Abdul Ghafoor Khan the spokesman for police told Xinhua.
He put the attack on the enemies of peace a term used against Taliban fighters while the insurgents who often target pro-government figures have yet to make comment.
Conflicts and Taliban-linked insurgency had left over 5,000 people, with some 2,000 civilians dead, in 2008 while the violenceis predicted to go up in 2009 in the post-Taliban central Asian state.
