Mumbai: Taking ahead its investigation the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested on Monday one more cop in connection with the 2002 Gujarat communal riots case.
The suspended police officer N K Patel was arrested for allegedly destroying the evidences in the case of a north Gujarat town Visnagar. It was on February 28, 2002 that the rioters burnt 14 Muslims alive in a van in which they were passing through the town. Subsequently 79 persons were arrested for the killing.
SIT during its investigation found that the then in-charge of the town police station Patel neither conducted proper investigation nor collected the required proofs with the intention that the accused might easily secure the bail.
Patel is the second police officer arrested by SIT in the Gujarat riots case. Earlier DSP KG Erad was arrested in Gulbarg Society case.
