Chandigarh gets Rs.120 mn tourism grant

Chandigarh : The Chandigarh administration has got a grant of Rs.120 million (Rs.12 crore) from the central government to develop the city as a tourist hub, an official said here Thursday.

The administration has launched a project called Development of Chandigarh as a Tourist Destination to develop the tourist potential of the city using the government grant, the administration spokesperson said.

“This project has been initiated under the supervision of Ram Niwas, home and tourism secretary of Chandigarh. The administration has also decided on the allocation of granted money for different projects,” the official said.

He added that Rs.39 million would be spent for the development of Botanical Garden, Patiali-Ki-Rao lake and forest area near Sarangpur village here.

The administration is also planning to build tree-top-huts in the Botanical Garden and a tourist rest house near Patiali-Ki-Rao forest range.

“A sum of Rs.27.3 million will be spent on Sukhna Lake,” he said, adding: “Rs.22.6 million has been sanctioned for the construction of tourist information centre and for illumination of lake complex to increase the visitors during late hours.”

“Rs.27 million will be used on landscaping, illumination and on the maintenance of Zakir Rose Garden here,” the spokesperson added.
