Sikh man killed gang-style in Vancouver

By IANS,

Vancouver : A 32-year-old Sikh man has become yet another victim of the on-going gang-style violence which has claimed dozens of young lives in the Indian Canadian community here.

Sukhwinder Singh Dhaliwal of Abbotsford city near here, who faced charges of drug and weapon possession and was out on bail, was gunned down in the Delta area of Vancouver Monday evening.

Police said his bullet-riddled body was found next to his Cadillac near the Delta city golf course.

Dhaliwal died from “fatal gunshot wounds at the scene”, police said.

Confirming that it was yet another case of gang-style killing in the Indian Canadian community, police said: “This fatality is a result of a targeted hit and would be described as a gang-style shooting.”

A former employee of a local cellphone company, the victim was held last May on seven counts, including drug-trafficking, and keeping an unauthorised weapon.

He was granted bail to face the charges later.

No one has been arrested for the killing.

Police have asked the community to come forward with any tips to help solve the case.

Gun-running and drug trafficking have plagued the Indian Canadian community for more than a decade, claiming more than a hundred young lives.

Most of these murder cases are still unresolved though the provincial British Columbia government has set up a gang task force to deal exclusively with these cases and drug-related violence in the community.

Most of Indian Canadians, who have roots in Punjab, are settled in the Surrey, Delta and Abbotsford areas around Vancouver.
