Curfew continues for fourth day in parts of Ujjain

Bhopal : An indefinite curfew remained in force for the fourth day in parts of Ujjain district in Madhya Pradesh Friday, after communal violence erupted in the area Tuesday, officials said.

The university exams were cancelled while students appearing for Madhya Pradesh state education board and the Central Board of Secondary Education exams were given relaxation, official sources said.

“The situation is peaceful in Mahidpur where curfew was relaxed for two hours for women Thursday. No untoward incident was reported,” Ujjain District Collector Ajat Shatru told IANS.

“We may give some relaxation in the curfew after assessing the situation in the evening,” he added.

Indefinite curfew was clamped in Mahidpur, 200 km from here, after a youth was killed and six people, including three policemen, were injured in Tuesday’s clash.

The clash occurred after the police tried to stop people of one community from entering the area where religious programmes of another community was underway.

A compensation of Rs.100,000 was given to the family of the person who was killed in the violence.
