German whistle-blower claims harassment

By IANS,

Panaji : A German national whose tip-off helped the police arrest a Polish hit man this month has claimed harassment by local politicians who he alleged are trying to hound him and his family out of the village.

In a complaint submitted to the Pernem police station, Kalenborn Heinz Willi has sought immediate police protection claiming that the sarpanch (village head) of Chopdem along with some goons threatened him and his family to vacate the house.

“They said if we do not vacate the house and the locality immediately, they will beat me and physically assault me and my family members,” Willi’s complaint submitted to the Pernem police station states.

Willi said that while it was his tip-off to the German embassy that led to the arrest of Polish contract killer Adam Pyotor Mancic on March 14, he was now being harassed for being a whistle-blower.

“Now the sarpanch of Chopdem is accusing me of sheltering the wanted Polish killer,” he said.

On March 14, the crime branch on a tip-off from the German embassy arrested Mancic, a 41-year-old alleged Polish contract killer, who was wanted by the Interpol for the alleged murder of a Berlin-based German businessman.

Mancic entered Goa in November last year and shifted residences several times over before putting up at Willi’s house at Chopdem, about 25 km from here.

Mancic’s arrest triggered an alarm in the sleepy coastal village, which has a smattering of foreigners living in its midst. A public meeting was also held by the locals last week, where a warning was sounded to all foreigners staying in Chopdem, asking them to verify their antecedents.

Fearing an attack from the villagers, who Willi claims have been instigated by local politicians, Willi has sought protection for himself and his family.

“I also request you to summon the sarpanch and the deputy sarpanch and interrogate them in regard to the threats given by them,” he said.

An officer of the Pernem police station acknowledged receiving the complaint from Willi.

“We are consulting our superiors in the matter. The sarpanch has been called and his statement has been recorded,” the official said adding that the German national’s house was being monitored by the police.
