Ghaziabad : A criminal, wanted by law to stand trial for various cases, was shot dead here in a gun battle with the police, officials said Thursday. One police officer was also injured in the exchange of fire.
According to police, Amit alias Bhura, who was wanted by the police of Uttarkhand and Uttar Pradesh and carried cash rewards for his capture, was shot in Loni area of the district.
The police said Amit and his accomplice robbed trader Vipin Goel of his car Thursday. Goel informed the police, who immediately flashed an alert.
Amit was in the stolen car and his accomplice was riding a bike when they were asked to stop by the police at a check point near Tronica City here.
Amit and his accomplice sped away and were chased by a team of special operations group (SOG) and the district police. In the exchange of fire Amit was killed while his accomplice managed to escape.
The SOG in-charge Anil Kaprawal was also injured in the firing, the police said.
Superintendent of Police (City) Anant Deo said Amit was carrying a cash rewards of Rs.20,000 each announced by Uttar Pradesh and the Uttarakhand police for his arrest.
“Amit was wanted in several cases of robberies, murder and extortion in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand,” Deo said.
