Kolkata : A Lok Sabha candidate of West Bengal’s ruling Left Front could be in trouble with the Election Commission for allegedly trying to influence her mother in voting inside the polling booth Thursday.
A television grab showed Prashanta Majumdar, Left Front partner Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) nominee from the Balurghat seat in South Dinajpur district, guiding her mother to press the electronic voting machine (EVM) button on a particular symbol.
The opposition Trinamool Congress immediately lodged a complaint with the Election Commission, alleging Majumdar has tried to influence her mother and violated the principle of secret voting.
Asked about the complaint, state chief electoral officer (CEO) Debasish Sen said: “We are looking into it.”
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has issued a notice to the Trinamool Congress candidate from Sreerampore Lok Sabha constituency Kalyan Bandopadhyay for his alleged hate remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
“He has been asked to reply by Friday,” said an Election Commission official.
The Election Commission was earlier sent a video footage of the interview in which Bandopadhyay had made the remarks.
Left Front major Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) had lodged the complaint with the Election Commission over Bandopadhyay’s comment.
Bandopadhyay has claimed since Bhattacharjee is not a candidate he has not violated the model code of conduct for the polls through his comments against the chief minister.
