Sonia Gandhi’s Tamil Nadu and Puducherry rallies cancelled

By IANS,

Chennai : Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s public meetings that were scheduled to be held in Chennai and Puducherry Wednesday have been postponed due to the ill health of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, a party leader said.

“It may not be possible for the honourable chief minister to attend the meeting…Since the meeting was scheduled to be a joint meeting, it has been postponed,” Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters here.

Karunanidhi was admitted to the Apollo Hospital with high fever Sunday.

“We will fix a new date to the convenience of both the Congress president and the chief minister,” Azad said.

Gandhi was scheduled to address a rally in Puducherry Wednesday afternoon and in Chennai in the evening.

Asked about Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s statement that the party was open to a post-poll alliance with the AIADMK, Azad said: “We will join hands with all like-minded secular parties.”

Parliamentary elections will be held in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry May 13.
