20 percent polling in Uttar Pradesh in four hours

Lucknow : The last of 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh saw 20.46 percent voting until 11 a.m. after a slow start early in the day.

The highest voter turnout was in Pilibhit constituency where Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Varun Gandhi is contesting, an official said. The lowest of 17 percent was recorded in Bareilly.

The constituencies going to the polls Wednesday include Rampur, Pilibhit, Budaun, Moradabad, Dharhaura, Bijnore, Bareilly, Aonla, Shahjahanpur, Kheri, Sambhal, Amroha, Nagina and Saharanpur.

About 19.5 million people are eligible to vote Wednesday. Prominent candidates include Jaya Prada (Samajwadi Party), former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin (Congress) and BJP’s Maneka Gandhi and her son Varun.

Polling began at 7 a.m. after a routine mock poll by officials at all the 20,807 polling stations, said deputy state election officer Atiq Ahmed.

As many as 203 candidates, including 15 women, are in the fray in the fifth and final round of voting in Uttar Pradesh. The state elects a total of 80 members to the Lok Sabha.

Balloting in the other seats took place between April 16 and May 7.
